Porta Diagonal: A Space for Health, Science, and Education

In a metropolitan area that is already a benchmark in biomedicine, healthcare research, and university education, Porta Diagonal aspires to become the epicentre of physical activity where these disciplines converge to improve people’s lives.

An Environment that Drives Collaboration

Located on the border between Esplugues and Barcelona, Porta Diagonal connects with some of the country’s most cutting-edge facilities: Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Hospital de Bellvitge, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the future Hospital Clínic, as well as both public and private universities. This proximity makes the project a unique opportunity to generate synergies between healthcare centers, research spaces, business hubs, and educational institutions.

In addition, its excellent connectivity with the rest of the metropolitan area—by road, public transport, or bike lanes—facilitates mobility for professionals, students, patients, and citizens.

Health BioCluster: Innovation in Health from Porta Diagonal

Porta Diagonal is part of the Health BioCluster, an alliance promoted by public and private institutions that aims to consolidate the largest biomedical cluster in Southern Europe. Its goal: to generate health innovation, foster knowledge transfer, and create an urban environment that supports cutting-edge research, education, and healthcare.

This ecosystem focuses on three key areas: digital health and data analysis, personalized medicine, and the knowledge economy. As a new strategic node, Porta Diagonal will provide the spaces, connections, and infrastructures that will enable this multidisciplinary collaboration.

Key Facilities and Transformative Spaces

One of the project’s most significant buildings will be the new infrastructure for Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, currently under construction. This space will house both healthcare and research activities and will be fully integrated with the rest of the project through public spaces and the pedestrian mobility network.

Porta Diagonal will also host offices, laboratories, training and meeting spaces, allowing universities, startups, companies, and research centers to coexist and interact fluidly.

The impact of Porta Diagonal will go beyond urban planning. By fostering the concentration of knowledge and talent in one place, the project will create new opportunities for skilled employment, encourage entrepreneurship, and generate a direct impact on society. It will be a place where knowledge is transformed into innovation with a real impact on people’s well-being.
